What is Your Set Point?

What is Your Set Point?

9 9 9 9, were the numbers that popped into my attention this morning when I checked in with myself after my morning run.  9 9 9 9, what does that mean and what does this have to do with you or your business?  And what do I mean by Set Point?

In answer to these questions, first of all, for me the numbers refer to an intuitive rating of my Mind, Body, Spirit and Emotions/Heart in any given moment.  It is a habit I formed a couple years ago, as I deepened my awareness that my thoughts, my feelings and my body all have their own language and that they are interconnected.

So what? Well, I also noticed that if my thoughts are lower, my emotions tend to be lower, my body feels less good in different ways and my spirit is pulled down.  Au contraire, I noticed that when one of my numbers goes up, it tends to lift the others.  This informal research led me to the idea that if I could do something that would lift one of the numbers, it would likely lift the others, which would probably improve the quality of my day, my life and my business, which I’ve discovered is true.

Somehow, intellectually knowing that the numbers are connected, when I check in, it leads me to know that if I’m not feeling good, by noticing what I am thinking, which is  typically correspondingly also less good, I can make a conscious choice to allow myself to continue to feel bad and think the thoughts that are there or think something different, and exercise my power of choice to feel better. Or, perhaps knowing that if I instead choose to increase my “body number” by moving it, breathing, stretching, eating something nourishing, or listen to what it’s telling me, all of which elevates my body, this then becomes the portal to elevate my mood, and leads to an interconnected cascade of other positive effects.

Secondly, being a business owner, I’ve also noticed a direct correlation between how I feel, what I’m thinking and how my business is flowing.  In my experience, when I’m feeling good, thinking positive thoughts, connected with others, my body is well slept, exercised, hydrated and fed….my spirits are elevated,  In this state of being, I experience that it benefits my business because I am more likely to make that call, attend that networking event, follow my inspiration to stay in or end up showing up at exactly the right place at the right time, attracting the new client, being fully confident and detached at that business meeting that ends up attracting people to say yes in some magical way, creating more and more serendipity to occur, and growing my cash flow.

Somehow again, these numbers, which are indicators to my overall state of inner being are a glimpse into what is happening in my outer life, personally, professionally and financially.  To me, it is a fascinating experiment and exercise for developing discipline, discernment and greater alignment with the life/business I want for myself. It takes discipline to notice and then to apply what I see to making a new choice.  It takes discernment about when to simply allow “what is present” to simply “be what it is” and when to move myself, my thoughts, and my feelings against the downward pull into an intentionally opposite direction.

Borrowing Merriam Webster’s definition of Set Point which is: <the level or point at which a variable physiological state (as body temperature or weight) tends to stabilize.> , I have found that my Mind, Body, Emotions, Spirit numbers tend to hover at 8 8 8 8, so on a day like today where I am a 9 9 9 9, I take note of what got me here, so I can duplicate it again.

So, if you are reading this and are open to a simply daily practice that holds great possibility for you to improve your own life and/or business, I invite you to notice what your numbers are in this moment by checking in with your mind, your body, your emotions/heart & your spirit, and trust the number that pops into your mind, then do it again tomorrow and the next day, and the next until it forms a habit for you and you learn what the different numbers feel like to you.    You can then start to see a pattern of what your “set point” is by what numbers are most common for you, and what makes them go up or down.  You can also then discover what choices you can make to boost the numbers you find.
